Choosing a Business School

Choosing a business school is a very important decision. Your choice will affect your career and your future.

When choosing a business school, there are many things think about before applying. Here is a list that will help keep you focused:

The Degree

Does the school offer the type of degree and program that you want? Nowadays there are many different options. You can now choose from two-year MBA programs, one-year MBA programs, Executive MBA programs, part-time MBA programs, and distance education MBA programs.

 Admission procedure

Students applying for the b-schools should look into the admission procedures of the b-schools.  Eligibility of you entering into the b-school needs to be verified. B-schools may adopt CAT/MAT/XAT/I-CET for admission procedures of the students.

 Approval

Students while choosing the business school should also concentrate on approval of the school from All India council for Technical Education(AICTE). AICTE approval is required to certify the B-school to adopt design, and oriented teaching, designing methodologies, problem solving approach. B-schools approved by AICTE will concentrate on greater exposure to Industrial and manufacturing processes. More so ever, AICTE approval would make the pedagogy more professional.

Accreditation

Accreditation means Recognition and guarantee of minimum quality of education. For the NBA it means a process of quality assurance, giving credit where it is due for some clearly visible and demonstrable strategies of academic activities and objectives of the institutions, known to be honestly pursued and efficiently achieved by the resources currently available with a potential for continuous improvement in quality for effective growth. This accreditation is possible only when an b-school has approval of AICTE and we can also term it as certifying for quality education.

 Recognition to the Degree

Degree obtained from Business schools should be certified by Association of Indian Universities. This certificate will qualify their degrees as master"s Degree so that they can apply for higher studies on this basis. This parameter again depends on whether you would like to pursue higher studies or not.

The Cost

Business school fee can be very costly and should be carefully considered before applying. Decide how much you are prepared to pay for your education and look into schools that fit into the financial parameter that you set. Keep in mind other expenses for the area such as cost of living and commuting.

The Curriculum

Many schools are now discouraging specializing in only one aspect of business. A general management perspective has been adopted as a result. However, concentration should still be considered. For example, if you are interested in marketing, choose a school that has an outstanding marketing program. But, at the same time you should also look into the consistency of the curriculum of the school. The courses offered at B-school should suit to the Industry requirements and practical exposure is required in the courses offered.

Faculty

This parameter is the most important aspect to be looked into.  If you are really interested in PGDM programme of b-school for quality and value based education then you have to look into the profiles of the faculty of the b-school. Faculty should be from academic/Industry exposure more so ever,  you should also concentrate on the ratio of In-house and visiting faculty. The B-school with good strength of in-house faculty will definitely do well as the students would be under guidance of the faculty and the commitment of in-house faculty would obviously will be high comparing to visiting faculty.

Summer Internships

Internships offered by B-schools should be critically considered to look into the viability of the employment by the student and his career. Considering the stipend for the Summer Intern is good but more than that nature of work of you are going to handle is going to fetch the student in his placement and his future work.

The Size

Assess your preferences. Are you interested in individualized attention? If so, it may be better for you to choose a school with small class sizes and a low student-to-teacher ratio.

The Ratings of the B-school

Much like a law school or medical school education, the academic content of a business school education does not vary much between programs. However, the MBA is analyzed and ranked by more organizations than any other academic degree. These ranking can help you determine which schools are the most prestigious. Keep in mind though, even if a school is not top-ranked, it can still have a good reputation.

Industry and institution interaction

To get practical exposure and to understand the ambience and culture of premium b-schools you should definitely opt the school which will have a minimum of one programme for the year for Industry and Institution interaction.

Social Activities

Students who  sensitize  towards the social issues of the society should look into this activity as one of parameters for choosing the B-school. Social activities of the school should be done not for the sake of Fame and Name but it should be done for the sake for up lifting the needy and to make the students as responsible citizens of India.

The Exclusiveness

Some business schools are very selective. They may only admit a small number of students into their program, making the application process very competitive. To help assess your chances, match your background (GPA, test scores, etc.) with the school"s admittance record. If you have doubts about your chances of acceptance, remember that you can apply to more than one school.

Strategic Training Wing

To make the students to be placed in good companies B-schools should definitely have a separate training wing to train and make the student ready for the future positions of the companies. At the same time you should also make a note of who is heading the wing and how was the previous training programmes conducted i.e., the effectiveness of the training programmes.

The Placement Statistics

Students usually pursue an MBA to enhance their future career options. Therefore, choosing a school with a good placement record is important. Most business schools will willingly supply placement statistics to interested applicants. Checking recruiter records and speaking with former graduates of the school will also give you further insight.
